Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said he is pleased to announce more Federal investment into local roads.
“I am pleased to announce the Australian Government has committed funding of $2,250,000 towards the construction of two new rest areas and the upgrade of three existing rest areas on the Barrier Highway about 140km north of Adelaide south of Burra,” he said.
“The Barrier Highway is a heavily utilised route for heavy vehicles who share the road with cars, travellers and tourists. Increasingly we are putting tougher rules on truckies and ensuring they take appropriate rests. We cannot expect them to comply unless we provide areas for them to get their truck off the road.”
“The highway will soon be more efficient, more reliable and safer thanks to upgrades being funded under round six of the Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
“We all understand how important it is to upgrade these roads – we all drive them often and see firsthand the jobs and opportunities agriculture and transport brings to Grey.
“I have been fighting for better roads and the Government’s strong investment into roads is fantastic news for truckies travelling through our region and all road users.
“With increased regulations for truckies it is paramount they have safe rest areas to use.”
Deputy Prime Minister, Nationals’ Leader and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the program provides funding to local councils and State and Territory Governments to help fund works designed to improve the safety and efficiency of important heavy vehicle routes around the nation.
“Around Australia we are investing in helping people get home sooner and safer, no matter where they live,” Mr McCormack said.
“That’s why we are continuing to deliver road funding where it’s needed, based mainly on the local knowledge, especially to councils which make up more than 60 per cent of the 93 projects selected under this latest round of funding.”
