Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey has written to the Minister for Agriculture Tony Burke urging him to consider the continuation of Exceptional Circumstances funding to some farmers in the Eyre Peninsula. “I am advised that the Minister will receive a report from the National Rural Advisory Council, on the Exceptional Circumstances declared zones in South Australia soon,” he said. “I am extremely concerned about farmers in the Central Eyre Peninsula Zone. “Much of Eyre Peninsula has enjoyed a good season however around100 farms in an area of Eastern Eyre Peninsula continue to be in severe drought, essentially the area around Cowell, Cleve and Arno Bay are the areas severely affected. “Whether or not this is a sufficient percentage of the Central Zone to keep the whole of Eyre Peninsula on Exceptional Circumstances is arguable and if not I have asked Minister Burke to declare a sub zone.” Mr Ramsey said that if these farmers do not continue to receive assistance banks will withdraw finance, triggering lower land values and severe consequences for the local communities. “A number of farmers from the area have contacted me,” he said. “I feel that morale is very low and I have concerns for the welfare of some. “Continuing to endure drought and struggling keep afloat when these farmers hear how the rest of the State is enjoying a productive season is very trying. “I have advised the Minister with the situation of these farmers and have urged him to take steps to ensure they receive assistance.” Media Contact: Leonie Lloyd-Smith (08) 8633 1744 February 4, 2010
